J/109 Starting & Leeward Gate Clinic
In preparation for the J109 North Americans, North U is offering a Starting and Leeward Gate Clinic. The clinic will be conducted by North U Director Bill Gladstone, North U Regatta Services Coach Chuck Allen, and North Sails J109 Class Rep. Jack Orr

Big Fleets are Different
Starting in a one-design fleet of 20+ J/109s is different from starting in a smaller (and less competitive) fleet.  Working your way through the crowd,  finding (and holding) your space, timing your approach, accelerating, holding your lane off the line.  It’s not easy.  Understanding what it takes to succeed AND putting that knowledge into pratice takes understanding and practice.

Guiding Principles
In our pre-brief and pre-clinic information we’ll lay out the guiding principles for successful big fleet starts; then we’ll go out and practice.  Our clinic goal is to run 13 starts – more than a whole regatta’s worth.

13 Starts
Coaches will be on the water giving general and specific feedback to the fleet and individual boats throughout the starting drills.  We’ll also be shooting video for review after sailing.

But Wait, There’s More!
Starts aren’t the only thing that’s tricky in  a big fleet.  Windward marks and leeward gates are also a challenge.

Leeward Gates
We’ll be staging crowded leeward gate approaches so you can practice positioning, pace control, and proper roundings in a big fleet setting.  In our pre-brief and pre-clinic literature we’ll review the rules and tactics of leeward gate roundings.  We’re planning to do 5 in drills and practice races to give teams the chance to hone their technique.  As with starts, there will be video to share afterwards as well.

Windward Marks
There will be a couple of practice races with windward-leeward courses to allow practice of windward mark approaches as well.

The program will be lead by North U Director Bill Gladstone, North U Coach Chuck Allen, and J/109 Class Rep Jack Orr.
