Kevin Denney is a graduate of Michigan State University and the IIT, Institute of Design where he is a faculty member teaching product and service design.
A native of Birmingham, Michigan, Kevin has been racing and cruising the lakes of the midwest since childhood. Kevin’s passion for racing sailboats started early while sailing c-scows and Hobie Cats with his father and Lasers on his own.
Kevin started racing optimists when he was nine and took to it immediately. “Sailing was a family sport for us, so I had a lot of opportunities to sail from early in life.”
Kevin went on to race FJ’s and 420’s at Michigan State and started to race bigger boats on the Great Lakes.
After moving to Chicago Kevin took to racing bigger boats like T-10’s, J-30’s, J-105’s, and Etchells.
Kevin learned the art of sailing instruction while working for Steve Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School where he taught a variety of courses from learn to sail to racing and cruising.
Kevin continues to hone his instructor knowledge by teaching sailing leadership events, onboard coaching, and cruising and racing classes.
